Prelimanary Task - Question 7
Looking at our prelim task we learnt how to use 180 degree rule, Match on action and shot reverse shot. In our prelim we broke the 180 degree rule because we filmed on the wrong side and stepped over the 180 degree line. After we watched our prelim through we realised that we broke this rule and had to make sure that it would never happen again. We have developed our skill of this because we now no that we should never step over the 180 degree line so that the characters stay the same side. We also used match on action in our prelim when the character steps through the door it cuts and then he is standing next to the girl. We thought this looked good in our prelim and it helps make the scene better. We have developed our skill using this because when harris steps out of the car he starts walking and then there is a slow transition into the next scene and harris is in the park which makes the audience wonder how he got into the park and how he spotted the victim. We also used shot reverse shot in our prelim which helped when getting to no who the character is. We developed this because when the two characters are speaking in our opening sequence it makes the audience feel what the character feels and it also makes them think and wonder why the girl is walking through the park on her own and gives an insight into the opening sequence.
Editing Catch up
Coursework- Editing Lesson 2
Today during editing we finished off darkening the footage so it looked like night time. We then trimmed all the footage we were using so you couldn't hear "role" or "action"in the shot and this made all the shots flow more and look more like a continuos film.
During the lesson I learned how to create a split screen effect on iMovie and we used this for one of our shots to create a better effect.
Next lesson, we still have plenty of editing to complete, including transitions and we need to do a voice over and add the credits in.
Today in lesson we were told to focus on adding transitions to our opening sequence. To begin with we looked through our blog at our research on our genre, so we could get information on the kind of transitions that horror movie's use so we could stick to the conventions. Whilst looking through my research and also on youtube, my group agreed that the main transitions horror films stick to is cuts and fading to black.
When we began to edit our footage we all took turns on the mouse so we all got to have a go at the editing stage. We added appropriate transitions to our footage, but we also left some as just cuts as we felt it looked more professional. As well as adding transitions we also decided to try and sort out the end bit of our opening sequence as none of us were happy with it. We managed to find out how to add audio from a clip onto a black screen and this was very helpful because it made the end look better.
I feel like this lesson was very successful, and I am happy with how our footage looks so far.
Question 1 - 9 Frame Analysis

In this firsts screenshot there is the shot of the victim walking through an open field. This also happens in 'The Devils Backbone' we have used this for setting and location because it is very similar because they are in an open field where no one is around to help them and they can be very vulnerable.

In this first screenshot you see the scene where the mum is ringing the daughter but the daughter has just been murdered so she cannot answer the phone. In this second screenshot there is a scene from 'Scream' where she is using the phone. We have selected these two screenshots because they are both using a phone as a prop and it is convenient for people our age to have phones and consistently use them. Also in our sequence the character has already been murdered but in 'Scream' the girl is going to be murdered just after she puts down the phone.

In this first screenshot you see a long shot of the victim who is walking home through a park. There is also a long shot in this other screenshot from 'The Devils Backbone'. These come up quite a lot in camera and editing because it helps set the scene and gets the whole environment of where the characters are.

In this first screenshot you will see the titles form our opening sequence which has a very messy font and it looks scratched and beat up which helps convince the audience that it is a horror film because it looks quite scary. In comparison we have titles from 'Saw' which are also very scruffy and look quite tacky however it works to there advantage because it shows that the film is going to be very messy and blood everywhere.

In this first screenshot you will see a screenshot you will see the scene when the murderer attacks the victim this sets the story because you no that there is going to be more killings. In this second screenshot there is a scene from 'Scream' where the murderer has just got hold of the victim is going to kill her which sets up the story because you no that no one is going to stop and find this murderer.

In this first screenshot you see the murderer this opens the genre because you start to get suspicious and wonder who this person is. In this second screenshot you see 'Scream' and the house is on fire which sets the scene because it has been done on purpose and someone is trying to kill her and sets the scene because you don't no who it is.

In this first screenshot you see the two characters that are talking and saying goodbye to each other this introduces the characters because they are vulnerable because one friend has left the other to walk through the park on her own. In this second screenshot you see a scene from the 'Amittyvile Horror' which introduces the characters by giving an insight into who they are for instance the boy is ill and the mom is trying her best to help him and they have to take him across the country to see the doctors.

Our opening sequence does not use any special effects. However in 'Scream they burn down the house and the fire just randomly happens.

In this first screenshot is Youtube which we used to research other opening sequences that are in the same genre as ours. And we also used it to find the music that we used over the title.
In the second screenshot there is a tripod which we used to make our film helping balancing the camera.
In the thrid screen shot there is photobooth which we used when updating our blog using vides and taking pictures of the storyboard.
In the fourth screenshot is facebook which we used to get in touch with eachother.
In the fifth screenshot is itunes which we used to add music that we downloaded into imove.
In the sixth screenshot is the camera that we used tofilm our opening sequence.
In the eigth screenshot is live type which we used to make the titles.
In the ninth screenshot is garageband that we used to edit our music that was downlaoded from youtube.
In the tenth screenshot is imovie hat we used to add clips and edit our opening sequence
In the 11th screenshot is my phone which i used to get in contact with people.

Question 4 - Audience profile photo Group 2
His name is Phil and is 20 years of age. His favourite programme is Most haunted because he loves how it makes him jump and he loves the suspense and tension that builds during the programme. He likes rock music preferably grunge and he loves the weird and unusual videos that normally freak people out because it is unusual. he has dark hair and is a dirty, grungy person who doesn't care what people think of him. he shops in topman, schuch, and matalan. he does listen and watch the radio and news because he wants to know about the events of the week and what is happening in the world.

Character Snapshot
i have compared Harris' character to Scream. The reason being is that they are have similar characteristics. Foe instance they both have to attack from behind and are scared to get noticed which is why they wear dark clothing and cover there face so that no one can notice them. They both have mid shots so that you can see fully what is happening and what they are about to do. they are also similar because they are murderers. They also target teenagers because they are weak and vulnerable. These characters are different because Scream kills the girl at her home which is stupid because the police would then come and find the body however harris' character kills the victim outside in the park where he could easily dispose of the body which is smart and harder for the police to find the body.

Final Edit - Friday 18th
Today i went over sound for one last time made sure that the music was finished and in time with the title credits because it was coming in at the wrong time and it was messing up the title sequence because the big build up has already come in, however i want it to come in when "The Discovered" has come up and then the bass comes in so it builds more tension. I also added a dark droned note so that it builds more tension after the screaming when the screen goes black. I've done this so that the audience don't know what is going to happen and the tension just builds and builds and it is typical of horror films to build tension using black screen to build tension with a droned note. I also made sure that the colour saturation was the same so it doesn't switch from light to dark. Finally i looked over the whole opening sequence and made sure that every slip was meant to be there and made sure that it looked good and that it would give the genre of our opening sequence across.

title sequence research - group 2
Today In Media we are looking at title credits to give us an idea of what conventions we could use to make our credits look good for our genre; Horror. I looked at the opening credits for halloween and it starts of with a dark screen and a smiling pumpkin appears on screen with background music which is quite freaky. The pumpkin remains on screen with the music and slowly gets closer and the music also gets louder so it slowly builds the tension tension and you start of feeling alright and as the pumpkin gets closer it freaks you out. The music is on the piano and is playing quite high notes which makes you feel weird because it gets in side of you and then the droned note note that is quite low helps to build the tension as it thickens the sound and makes it sound unique.

I also looked at fonts to see if there was any our group could use that would help convince the viewers that our sequence is a horror and it would also go with the conventions and give us a better title. The titles left and below are my favourites from the website and i believe that they could help us give the conventions to the audience.
I also looked at "Dawn of the Dead" opening sequence which is a montage of the world now that the zombies have roamed free. It shows how gruesome they are and how the film we be like. It also has a news report overtop of this and there is also the sound of the heartbeat pumping fast which could connote that someone is in need of help or is dying. There is also screaming from the news report where the people are fleeing from the dead.

Blog Update in Class - group 2 30/1/2011 - transitions
Today in class we looked over our five opening sequences to see if there are transitions that are used in horror films. One transition that came up quite a lot was the fade to black transition. After looking for transitions our group came together and we started to edit our sequence. We first looked at the part of our sequence where the actress is walking and you see two POV shots then the bag is put over her head by our murderer. We was trying to smooth out the scene because it was just straight cut so we added in a fade to black transition. then we added in more screaming because it fades to black and then nothing happens so we added in screaming so that it builds more tension.

Group 2 - Editing
Today in Lesson we started to cut bits out of the sequence that was bad and we worked out what will work and what wont. We also found out with the help of Miss how to use picture in picture. We also started to work on sounds that could help us build tension such as droned sounds that change in dynamics by getting louder as the note goes on. We also edited the darkness of the clip so that we can achieve our idea of Day and Night.
Group 2 - Rough Cut
Filming on Wednesday didn't go well because of the the time it took get from mild light to dark when we tried to film it was so dark that nothing could be seen on the camera and because it was in the park there were no street light available, Thursday we had the same problem so we decided to use a editing technique called Day and Night where we would film at day time but make it look like it was filmed at night by editing on iMovie this would resolve our problems, so on Saturday we met so that we could film the whole sequences and then edit on Monday
Monday- editing
Tuesday-editing
To day we were able to pick out the scene which we wanted and on Tuesday we will then add the credits title, and sound we also edit the film to make it long enough, to day we also be able to play with the Day and Night editing technique and see how we could make it look different from our original daylight scene.

Rough Cut - Group 2
today in lesson we uploaded all the footage filmed on Saturday and we was working out what shots went well with what we was trying to achieve. We still have to cut some footage out of sequence which we will do next Lesson and we will start to see what effects will go well with our idea and what we are trying to achieve.

Blog Update
Last Monday Harris and I worked on the opening credits and was working with imovie and live type and we was trying to create an affective opening credit for our sequence. We also added some music behind it to make it feel scarier and give it that horror effect. Devon and Paige went to a room to go over camera angles and camera shots so that when it comes to filming the main sequence they know what they are doing and they can explain to everyone else how to use the camera in an effective way. The whole group then came together and we were trying to figure out when we could film.

Flat angle, ground shot
Dark forest/park, as if the camera has been dropped. We hear laboured breathing getting progressively louder and louder as-if the women is getting closer to the camera. The shot is in night vision.
A figure of a woman distressed then appears in the camera shot, she is slowly crawling towards the camera. The scene is quiet apart from her breathing/crying. As she gets closer she reaches out as if to grab the camera, there is a pause of 3 seconds, the woman is just staring into the camera looking very fearfully.
Suddenly the woman is dragged away from the camera from an unseen person/thing.
Diagetic screams until the scene is totally silent, slight pause for 2 seconds.

Title appears:
The dark night fades into morning. An old man walking a dog is seen. The dog runs to the tent. Middle shot is then used to show the dog sniffing the tent. The man then walks over and realised something is wrong and pulls his phone out of his pocket. An extreme close up in then used to show him dialling 999.

NEWS REPORTER
Good morning, I'm here in Kent reporting live from the scene of what looks to be a brutal attack on a young group of friends. As you can see behind me the tent that the friends were planning to camp in is in a severe state. It has been predicted the attack could have taken place between 11pm- 3am, but has yet to be confirmed. Beside me I have the chief investigator PC RavWeilding. What has exactly happened here?
PC RAV
I have never seen anything like this before, absolutely nothing, it's obscene what must have been going through the person's head to commit such a crime. We have no official information yet on what happened but we are trying our best.
NEWS REPORTER
OK back to the studio!
MAN'S VOICE (O.S.)

Long shot
The investigators show the news reporter around the site.
For a moment we see drag marks across the grass where the girl had been dragged; a quick flash transition is used for a flashback. We see the girl being dragged along the floor; screaming and crying (3 seconds). Another flash transition is used to go back to present, showing the investigator looking at the ground looking pale and fearful.
